Maybe. But fuck that. Hirschberg’s profile was long overdue and completely correct. And now she is getting attacked for doing things that everyone has done in profiles since forever.
The line may have been a cheap shot, but it was not the piece’s center by any means, which everybody knows. If people weren’t such score-keeping babies about media status they would be calling up M.I.A. with questions like, “So is it true that your father actually wasn’t with the Tamil Tigers? Because that’s the central conceit of your political significance.”
Instead we get two Observer articles where Hirschberg has to explain about french fries and telling details.
